Gaby is the five year old daughter of Roberto and Alicia, loving, caring, affluent, intelligent parents. But there is a dark secret that has been hiding for both Alicia and Gaby. Roberto knows the past of Gaby, that she is a baby that has been born in captivity to parents that are young, poor and probably subversive in political ideas. Gaby was taken from those parents, when they were murdered and given to the childless but deserving parents of affluent and conservative political background.
In Argentina, like many South American countries, there was a political cleansing of ideas that the military performed. Many people were held in captivity, murdered, and taken due to their political or social status. Years later, the women: mothers, grandmothers, and daughters took to the streets to protest what had gone on in this country.
What will happen to Gaby?? She is a beautiful, intelligent and happy child, who has lived with Roberto and Alicia for five years. I hope that she will be with her mother Alicia. Who is a wonderful role model, because she has taken from the past and learned from it to better herself and society. I believe that she will raise Gaby with the knowledge of who her real parents were and that she will allow her biological grandmother to have an influence in her life.
As for Gaby's father, Roberto, he should have to make restitution for his crimes against humanity. He was raised quite different than how he turned out, because he had very selfish ideas. When he yelled at Gaby's grandmother and turned against his beautiful wife, I was shocked and felt that he had shown the pig he truly was.
I believe that Gaby will be influenced by her past and will be able to forge ahead to the future, with the ability to know that her biological mother and father loved her, and that she will now continue a loving home with her mother, grandparents and her biological grandmother.

Great summary. I agree with Roberto being so different from the rest of his family. I didn't like the way he yelled at this father and totally agree with your discription of him for abusing his wife. I was shocked by this also. I had no idea he would be so hurtful to someone he seemed to love so much. I hope Gabby is raised by her mother too. I liked her comments about history and agree that she learned from the past and used her knowlege to better herself and society. I think she also was so kind to Sara and would have her involved in Gabby's life. I hope she does not let Roberto anywhere near Gabby. I thought Gabby was an incredibly strong 5 year old. She conversed so well with her mother and was very insightful about what happened in her kindergarten class.

I think it was you who responded to my blog and asked the question how does 911 relat to the movie. When I researched the womens movement that we saw in the movie, it began saying how the white scarves they wore on their heads represented a baby blanket and usually had their childs name on it. Wikipedia then went on to way that this gruop the Madres de Plaza de Mayo spplit into 2 groups, still in existence today. One of these groups is in support of the hijackers of 911. I hope this answers your question.

Kris, I agree with you on the fact you want Gaby to stay with Alicia because she is a good role model. Alicia is definitely a wonerful role model and loving mother. What bothers me is the fact that Roberto was so secrative about the adoption, why didn't prompt Alicia to demand answers from him at that time! Was she so happy to have a child, that how she got it didn't matter. I don't feel Alicia is that kind of person, however; I believe Alicia is also somewhat to blame. Roberto is definitely an arrogant, self-rightious !@#@! person, but all the blame is not to be placed on him.
ReplyDeleteI also believe Gaby will be influenced by her past. There is no doubt she will know everything that had happened. My forethought is that Alicia, Gaby and Sara will unite to form their own family, and fight for the lost souls of Argentina.
Dear Sue:
ReplyDeleteI still think that this movie had nothing to do with the hijackers.
I think this is where the 9/11 comes into play when you research Madres de Plaza de Mayo:
ReplyDelete"Hebe de Bonafini, President of Association of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, about the 9/11 attacks: “When the attack happened…I felt happiness.” Their animosity against the US has its justifications. Juana de Pargament, Treasurer of Association, claims that the U.S. taught the Argentine military and police forces how to make people “disappear” by drugging them, loading them into planes, and pushing them out over the ocean. But the Associations commitment to building an egalitarian society are unquestionably admirable." https://webspace.utexas.edu/cmr485/www/mothers/history.html
I agree it has nothing to do with the film we saw especially since it was 1975 way before 9/11 even happened. But it seems the mother's blame the US for training the Argentine military to make people disappear.
Back to the film. I think that maybe Alicia does not go and get Gaby. That she is so sickened by how her husband adopted her, that she is too ashamed to keep her as her own. I think that Alicia's own self conscious would not allow her to keep her from Sara.
